Caitlin Smith (b. 2000) (she/they) is a Chicago-based, Black femme photo artist whose work explores the blend of intimate portraiture with alternative film processes to create imagery that reflects the complexities of the Black femme's experience. Smith explores the complexities of a Black femme through personal reflection on trauma healing, spirituality, sexuality, friendship, and mental health.

Born and raised in Chicago, Smith's journey into photography began at the age of 14. Her commitment led her to graduate from Syracuse University in May 2023, earning her BFA in Communications Design. During her time at Light Work, a nonprofit photo lab facility, Smith's dedication was evident as a work-study photo lab assistant, assisting artists and other photo lab workers with printing, scanning, and critiquing work. This experience ignited a passion for experimentation, particularly with printing methods, paper materials,
and photo scanning.

After completing her undergraduate studies, Smith consciously decided to return to Chicago to establish her independent artist practice in her home studio, where she continues experimenting with alternative photographic processes.
